No summer break for euro zone

The euro zone debt and banking crisis had a lot of gruelling climbing, sprint-like bursts of progress and the occasional calm stage on the flat. As talk persists that cash-strapped Greece might have to exit the euro, and bond markets panic over Spain, the fate of Europe's single currency could soon be hanging in the balance again. Britain tops the list of outside economies most at risk from any worsening of the euro zone crisis because of its trade and banking links with the single currency bloc

NEW YORK -- Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o has told Katie Couric that he briefly lied about his online girlfriend after discovering she didn't exist, while maintaining that he had no part in cre sac louis vuitton ating the hoax.Pressed by Couric to admit that he was in on the deception, Te'o said he believed that his girlfriend Lennay Kekua had died of cancer and didn't lie about it until December."Katie, put yourself in my situation. I, my whole world told me that she died on Sept. 12. Everybody knew that. This girl, who I committed myself to, died on Sept. 12," Te'o said in an interview to air Thursday on Couric's syndicated talk show. A segment of the interview with louis vuitton bags p://www.loveslouisvuitton.com/]louis vuitton handbags Te'o and his parents was broadcast today on Good Morning America. The Heisman Trophy runner-up said he only learned of the hoax when he received a phone call in December from a woman saying she was Kekua."Now I get a phone call on Dec. 6, saying that she's alive and then I'm going be put on national TV two days later. And to ask me about the same question. You know, what would you do?" Te'o said.An Associated Press review of news coverage found that the Heisman Trophy runner-up talked about his doomed love in a Web interview on Dec. 8 and again in a newspaper interview published Dec. 10.Te'o's father defended his son when Couric pointed out that many people don't believe the Irish star, suspecting he used the situation for personal gain."People can speculate about what they think he is. I've known him 21 years of his life. And he's not a liar. He's a kid," Brian Te'o said with tears in his eyes.Yesterday, the woman whose photo was used as the "face" of the Twitter account of Te'o's supposed girlfriend says the man allegedly behind the hoax confessed and apologized to her.Diane O'Meara told NBC's Today show that Ronaiah Tuiasosopo used pictures of her without her knowledge in creating a fake woman called Lennay Kekua.

WASHINGTON - Joe Biden is thanking Democratic supporters in the afterglow of President Barack Obama's second inauguration, dropping plenty of hints that he may try to cement Obama's legacy with his own presidential campaign in 2016.Biden packed his schedule with events and receptions attended by party insiders surrounding Obama's inauguration, giving him a chance to thank prominent lawmakers and donors and plant the seeds for a future bid. It comes on the heels of the vice president's prominent role in brokering a compromise on the fiscal cliff standoff with Congress and developing gun-control legislation after December's deadly elementary school shooting in Connecticut.Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton remains the heavy favorite of the Democratic party faithful, but Biden is making clear that he has no intention of closing any doors that could lead to the White House especially if Clinton decides not to run.As vice president, Biden can stay in the spotlight, and he is no stranger to the rigors of a presidential campaign after two unsuccessful bids, in 1988 and 2008. The former Delaware senator has racked up a long list of domestic and foreign policy achievements, even as his occasional off-script moments have become fodder for Republican critics. There's a whole lot of reasons why I wouldn't run, Biden, who will be nearly 74 on Election Day in 2016, told CNN before the inauguration. I don't have to make that decision for a while. In the meantime, there's one thing I know I have to do, no matter what I do. I have to help this president move this country to the next stage. http://www.saclouisvuittono.com Yet with his high-profile perch, Biden is doing nothing to tamp down the speculation.Biden's private swearing-in ceremony Sunday was attended by recently elected New Hampshire Gov. louis vuitton portefeuile Maggie Hassan, someone who would be a potent ally in the state's first-in-the-nation primary. Attendees at a Sunday afternoon reception at the vice president's residence at the Naval Observatory said they noticed a lot of pa louis vuitton rty activists from early voting states like New Hampshire, Iowa and South Carolina.During the weekend, Biden attended several balls with Democrats who would energize a presidential campaign. At the Iowa State Society Inaugural Ball, Biden told partygoers he was proud to be president of the United States, prompting cheers. He quickly corrected himself, saying he was proud to be vice president of the United States, but I am prouder to be ... President Barack Obama's vice president. Laughing it off, he said, There's goes that. At a ball celebrating Latino voters, Biden said the Hispanic community was a decisive factor in the election. This is your moment, Biden said. America owes you. Some party stalwarts said it was noteworthy that Biden asked Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina justice, to administer the oath of office. At a ball honoring environmentalists, sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation and other environmental groups, Biden said the Obama administration was committed to confronting climate change. I don't intend to let these four years go by without getting a hell of a lot done on the environment, Biden said.On Inauguration Day, Biden and his wife, Jill, walked part of the parade route, waving to the cheering crowds in a made-for-TV moment. At one point, the vice president even jogged across Pennsylvania Avenue to shake hands with Today show weatherman Al Roker, a clip that the morning show played repeatedly the following day. It seems obvious that he's going to keep that option open for himself and do the right things, said Mike Gronstal, the Democratic leader of the Iowa state Senate, who attended the Naval Observatory reception. Gronstal said Biden actively worked the room, thanking supporters for their help during the 2012 campaign. On Tuesday afternoon, Biden met with members of the Democratic National Committee at a private reception after a DNC meeting, where delegates unanimously re-elected Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz to another term as chair.A long line of DNC members spilled into the lobby before the reception and REO Speedwagon's Roll With the Changes, a frequently played campaign theme song, could be heard from outside the room. Attendees said Biden thanked them for their work and offered an upbeat assessment of the second term, mingling with party leaders and posing for photographs during the hourlong gathering. If Clinton decides not to run, Biden could draw upon good will from Obama's voting coalition, an ability to connect with regular folks and extensive campaigning in key states like Iowa, New Hampshire, Florida and Ohio. But he would also need to deal with personal poll numbers that rank below Obama's and a propensity to commit foot-in-mouth moments in an era where political gaffes can quickly sink a campaign.

As a paramedic, Peter Carlson is used to racing to people's homes. But on his way to see 86-year-old Erika Bruvelis earlier this month, he stopped for coffee and parked outside her Minneapolis house for several minutes -- reluctant to arrive too early. In this case, no one had called 911, and with any luck, no one would go to the hospital.Carlson, 28, is one in the first wave of community paramedics in Minnesota and the nation. Instead of responding to emergencies, his job is to try to prevent them.Since October, Carlson has been paying house calls on dozens of patients as part of an innovative program to keep the frail and elderly out of the emergency room. Depending on what they need, he might do a blood test, call Meals on Wheels or help arrange for a wheelchair ramp. Over Christmas, he even baked cookies for one of his patients. In the last two years, Minnesota has become the epicenter of the community paramedic movement, which advocates say could save a fortune in health care costs if it helps patients stay out of the hospital. In 2011, the nation's first training program opened at Hennepin Technical College and Minnesota became the first state to adopt a formal certification program. The first graduates, including Carlson, were certified last summer. We are kind of inventing this, admits Carlson, one of nine community paramedics employed by North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. After five years as a traditional paramedic, Carlson volunteered to get the extra training for his new role, which is more about chronic-illness issues than gunshot wounds and heart attacks. Now he rotates between the two roles: two days in an ambulance, one day as a community paramedic louis vuitton portefeuile , driving his Honda Accord to scheduled appointments. The way that we're looking at it, it is a lot cheaper in the long run, said Barb Andrews, who coordinates North Memorial's community paramedic program. As a paramedic herself, Andrews said she was struck by how many emergency calls seem eminently preventable -- when an elderly patient mixes up his meds, for example, or slips and falls on a throw rug. So many times in my career I've said, 'If only ... ' she said. If only this patient had understood this better. If only somebody made sure they had their medications. That, she said, is the idea behind the community paramedic.Putting on a game faceCarlson dropped his oversized backpack on the bed and greeted his patient, who was perched on a wicker chair in the corner of her bedroom. How are you feeling? he said, raising his voice so she could hear him.Bruvelis put on a game face. Feeling OK today, she said softly. But she clearly was not. Today is kind of a low-energy day, explained her 44-year-old son, Paul Bruvelis. For the last three weeks, he said, his mother had been too weak to leave the second-floor bedroom of her century-old house. Normally she's a very independent woman who loves to cook and bake and garden, he said. When he called her doctor's office several weeks back, a nurse suggested sending a community paramedic to check on her. I'd never really heard of it, Paul Bruvelis said, but he was grateful -- he dreaded having to take his mother to the clinic in this condition. This was Carlson's third visit, and he chatted with mother and son like old friends. So how was New Years? he asked. He unzipped his backpack and took out a stethoscope and blood pressure cuff, and a couple of kits for blood and urine samples. Are you dizzy? he asked. She nodded. What's going to make you feel better? he said. That is a good question, she replied.Carlson suspected a urinary tract infection, but he would have to send the samples to the lab for testing, just to be sure.'Eyes and ears'There's no calling 911 to get a community paramedic. All visits are scheduled by a doctor or clinic. The doctors really see the paramedic as an extension of their eyes and ears out into the community, said Dr. Mark Bixby, medical director for North Memorial's 12 primary care clinics.Bixby said paramedics can be especially helpful when patients are struggling with chronic illness. As a doctor, he said, he might wonder why a patient with diabetes is having trouble controlling his blood pressure or blood sugar. By going into their home, the community paramedic may spot the trouble: Maybe the patient didn't fill a prescription. Or the refrigerator is empty. They can figure out stuff that you can't do from an office. Not all patients like the idea, Bixby said. People are private, he sac louis vuitton said, and some see this as an intrusion. But already, there's evidence that it's kept numerous patients out of the emergency room.Carlson sees himself as a troubleshooter and he's armed with a long list of social services to refer to patients who need extra help.

It聮s hard to believe it聮s winter out there with the temperatures we聮ve been seeing. While the mercury is supposed to drop, things will continue to be quite moderate for the heart of winter. And we sure aren聮t complaining. The warm weather certainly has kept local anglers out on the water, and just in time.Sea bass season kicked off on New Year聮s Day with a 15 fish, 121/2 inch minimum size limited season. Running into February in length (although given the seem moncher outlet ing capriciousness of fisheries regulations today that聮s no sure bet) this season offers local anglers some of the best fishing of the year, albeit with some potentially rugged conditions.Capt. Rick Yakimowicz of Fisherman聮s Wharf in Lewes reports outstanding fishing on their inaugural deep drop trip of the season. Patrons were actually releasing one-and-a-half pound bass in order to bring home coolers full of four pound and up bass. John Driscoll slid home with the pool winner, a 7-pound class sea bass, and everyone walked away with a charge of nice fish. We聮d also be remiss in not passing along congrats to Yakimowicz聮s son, Rick, for keeping the local lineage of the sea going with his upcoming attendance in the prestigious Massachusetts Maritime Academy to learn the craft of being a ship driver. While it might be tempting to save some of the boat ride and drive to a northern port for a shorter trip over the water, early reports suggest that, although you might spend more time aboard the boat, trips out of Delaware have offered a good bit of variety in the form of tilefish to go along with the bass. Mixed in with the tasty tiles and the delicious sea bass have been some real slammer blues, porgies and pollack. If you decide to venture out, remember these trips are by reservation only, so call ahead. This is no light-tackle affair, so make sure you bring gear capable of handling upwards of a pound in weight. Braid and/or electric reels are acceptable tackle on most of these trips, but it pays to call ahead. Clam is the bait of choice, though some anglers have employed deep water jigs to effectiveness.Old Inlet reports there have been some linesiders lingering around the area. Some keeper stripers have fallen to surf casters, particularly in the southernmost portions of our region toward the Maryland border. Fresh bunker is a thing of the past until spring, so frozen is the bait of choice. Some stripers, though mainly short, have been taken by anglers long lining pink saltwater flies at the Inlet.Boat anglers have scored on fish off of Sea Colony when they have been able to locate them aol moncler . Remember moncler sale , gulls are good but gannets and terns only eat fish 聴 no left over pizza for them 聴 so they are usually more trustworthy when you are picking birds to check under. Trolling Stretch 25s or tossing bucktails to the fish is a good way to get in on the action once you find them.Plenty to see and catch this winter, so take advantage of the outstanding weather we聮ve been having and get out there. Good luck and good fishing.

LONDON -- There was something noticeably different about Rodney Stuckey on Tuesday afternoon. It was his mouth. To be more precise, it was his front row of teeth moncler .To be even more precise, one of his two front teeth was missing -- courtesy of oral surgery he underwent Monday. It looked painful, but Stuckey said he was all right and flashed a grin to prove his point."They said moncler doudoune everything was fine," Stuckey said after practice at the University of East London. "They gave me some antibiotics and pain pills, so I'm good."The dental work is courtesy of the shot he took Dec. 21 during the Pistons' 100-68 victory over the Wizards. He had a tooth knocked loose, which caused him to leave the floor briefly. The team thought Stuckey would be OK when his tooth started to tighten in doudoune moncler his mouth, but an X-ray revealed damage, so the tooth was removed."We thought it wasn't that bad because it was getting tighter as time went on, but I went to the doctor and got X-rays, they found multiple fractures in my gums," Stuckey said. "It happens. It'll be fixed soon."PLAYING ROTATION: With Ukrainian Slava Kravtsov on the team, there is the question of whether the rookie center will be active against the Knicks on Thursday. The matchup against the Knicks probably isn't a good one for Kravtsov, however."There is going to be some pressure on me because the Knicks play small, and you always got to do what's in the best interest of the team," coach Lawrence Frank said.
