Ecuador announced Thursday that it was granting asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Meanwhile, a standoff continues outside the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where Assange has been holed up for the past two months.

At a news conference in Quito, Ecuador’s foreign minister, Ricardo Patino, said his country had decided to grant asylum to the WikiLeaks founder “because of the fears expressed by Mr. Assange, we believe that his fears are legitimate, and there are threats that he could face political persecution if the measures aren’t taken to avoid them.” Patino was referring to the likelihood that Assange would be extradited to Sweden to face questions on sex crime allegations and then to the United States to face possible charges for leaking classified U.S. documents on WikiLeaks.
